A heart-wrenching collision on a Wimbledon school lawn will forever be etched in the memories of the families who lost their loved ones. On 6 July 2023, Claire Freemantle's Land Rover crashed into an end-of-term tea party, claiming the lives of Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau, both eight years old.
The tragedy occurred at The Study Preparatory School in Wimbledon, with multiple families left traumatised. Ms Freemantle, 49, from Wimbledon, has been charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, as well as seven counts of causing serious injury to parents and children present at the gathering.
Among those seriously injured were Nuria Sajjad's mother, Smera Chohan, and another mother, Tamsyn Van De Vyver. Further injuries were sustained by a third mother and her seven-month-old baby, as well as two other eight-year-old girls and a seven-year-old girl. The full extent of the physical and emotional trauma caused by the crash continues to impact the school community and the families involved.
During a recent appearance at the Old Bailey, Ms Freemantle confirmed her identity but was not asked to enter any pleas at this stage. The court proceedings will now move towards the full trial, which has been provisionally scheduled for 6 September 2027, allowing time for all necessary legal preparations and investigations to be completed.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the devastating consequences of such accidents. The lengthy legal process underscores the complexity of cases involving multiple fatalities and serious injuries, as authorities work to ensure a thorough and just resolution for all affected.
