Liverpool's £116m signing Florian Wirtz is facing scrutiny over his performance, more than a year after his move to Anfield. The German midfielder has struggled to consistently hit top form, leading to suggestions he should be dropped from the team.
Wirtz has made 56 appearances for the Reds, scoring seven goals and providing 11 assists. However, last season he had no goal involvements against any of the top-10 Premier League teams. This term, he has started every league and Champions League game, managing just one assist across seven matches.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has called for Wirtz to be taken out of the team, citing a lack of defensive contribution and goal creation. However, manager Andoni Iraola, who succeeded Arne Slot in the summer, has defended Wirtz, stating he looks at performance collectively and that Wirtz has had good games this season.
Despite his current struggles, Wirtz created 95 chances from open play last season, more than any other Liverpool player. Former Reds captain Steven Gerrard believes Wirtz is a major talent who needs help and support.
