Wolverhampton Wanderers have confirmed they will not play The Liquidator song before home games at Molineux this season, following a review into whether it should be brought back.
The song was originally banned several years ago because of offensive chants aimed at rivals West Brom. The club held discussions with the Molineux Stadium Safety Advisory Group (SAG) and supporters before reaching their decision.
In a statement, Wolves said: “Having considered the history of the song, the views expressed by supporters and the club’s responsibilities around supporter behaviour, safety and governance, Wolves has decided that The Liquidator will not be reintroduced into the pre-match entertainment schedule at Molineux.”
The club added that it recognises the song’s significance to some supporters but noted that football and the regulatory environment have changed considerably over the past two decades. Wolves also pointed to recent FA sanctions for mass discriminatory chanting as part of the backdrop.
Wolves executive chairman Nathan Shi said: “When I spoke to supporters in May, I said we would look at this issue again properly, and we have done that. We have considered the different views, reviewed the history and context, and consulted with the Safety Advisory Group. Having gone through that process, we believe this is the right decision for the club.”
