Lenita Moreno, 25, has been arrested on a charge of aggravated arson following a fire at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building in Kaysville, Utah, on 10 July. Authorities allege the incident occurred a day before her scheduled wedding at the same location.
Investigators state the blaze, which they say caused $108,000 in damage, was started using a tampon and other flammable items. Court documents, reported by KUTV, indicate the fire began in the Relief Society room while Moreno, her groom, and family members were setting up for the wedding.
The family reportedly stated they were about to leave the church when the fire alarm activated. A bystander is said to have used water from wedding decorations to extinguish the fire, while another used a fire extinguisher.
Police allege that video footage from an Ace Hardware store shows Moreno stealing two cigarette lighters earlier on the day of the fire. Moreno reportedly admitted to stealing from the store but did not disclose what she had taken. Authorities also state that Moreno did not obtain a marriage license for her wedding, despite claiming she had.
Moreno was also booked with retail theft and providing false information to a peace officer. She was being held without bail as of Tuesday.
