A woman was physically assaulted in a London Travelodge after hotel staff reportedly provided her domestic abuser with a room key. The woman, who remains anonymous, told the BBC she had booked the hotel in October 2025 to escape the man.
She stated that her abuser entered the hotel, informed reception staff that his girlfriend was upstairs having a seizure, and asked for her room details. He was then given a key and directed to her room, where she says he kicked in the door, assaulted her, and attempted to take her phone.
Travelodge has faced criticism for previous incidents where keys were given to men without first verifying with the female guests. A spokesperson for the hotel chain said that customer safety and security is a priority and that an independent review of their room access security policies and escalation procedures was commissioned earlier this year.
The spokesperson added that changes have been made to strengthen their room access security policy and incident escalation procedures, supported by training for all customer-facing staff. They also stated that their policies were not correctly followed in this instance.
