A woman in her 30s is in a critical condition following a shark attack at Coogee Beach in Sydney on Saturday. The incident, which occurred shortly after 11am local time, saw the woman sustain significant injuries to her arm and leg.
Emergency services were called to the popular beach after members of the public pulled the woman from the water and began administering first aid. Paramedics from NSW Ambulance subsequently took over treatment on the beach before transporting her by road to St Vincent's Hospital. A spokesperson for NSW Ambulance confirmed that multiple crews attended to the woman at the scene.
In response to the attack, NSW Police cleared Coogee Oval to facilitate a potential airlift by a Careflight helicopter, though the woman was ultimately taken to hospital by road. Authorities have confirmed that Coogee Beach, along with nearby Clovelly and Bronte beaches, have been closed to the public. Surf lifesavers also cleared the water at Tamarama beach, north of Coogee, shortly after the incident, informing swimmers and surfers of the closures.
Coogee Beach is renowned for its generally calm waters and is a favoured spot for both local residents and tourists, often attracting thousands of visitors, particularly during the summer months. Shark attacks in the area, while rare, prompt immediate and extensive safety protocols to protect beachgoers.
The closure of these popular coastal areas underscores the seriousness of the incident and the rapid response from emergency services and local authorities. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack are expected to continue.
