May el-Toukhy's Danish drama, 'Woman Unknown', has been awarded the prestigious Golden Lion at the 83rd Venice Film Festival. The film, which explores Denmark in the aftermath of the Nazi occupation, makes el-Toukhy the eighth woman to win the festival's top prize.
John Malkovich secured the Best Actor award for his performance in the CIA comedy 'Wild Horse Nine'. Malkovich accepted the accolade via video message, as he was unable to attend the ceremony due to filming commitments. This win is noted to significantly increase his chances of winning an Oscar next year.
Mathilde Arcel, who plays the lead in 'Woman Unknown', received the Best Actress award. She expressed her honour, noting it was her first lead role and first film festival appearance. The Silver Lion grand jury prize went to South Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong for 'Possible Love', while a special jury prize was given to 'NAZA', a documentary by Israeli directors Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor.
