Three women achieved the top spots in an ultra-marathon held at the Hardwick Estate in Derbyshire, which organisers have stated is a first for this type of event in the UK.
The Rasselbock Backyard Ultra, where competitors run a 4.16-mile course every hour until one person remains, took place on Saturday. Becky Atkinson, from west Wales, won the competition, completing 40 hours of continuous running and a total distance of 166.4 miles.
Hayley Wilson, from Worksop in Nottinghamshire, and Hollie Jones, from Easby in Yorkshire, secured second and third place. Event organiser Eric Keeler noted that an all-female winning line-up has only occurred once before globally, in Iceland.
The event featured 141 competitors, with 21% women and 79% men. Matt Dillon from Hardwick Hall commented that it felt fitting for female runners to make their mark at the estate, given its historical connection to Bess of Hardwick.
