Women's Super League 2 Kicks Off with Tweaked Promotion Format

The Women's Super League 2 season begins on Friday with Watford hosting Burnley, featuring a new promotion structure where only the champions are guaranteed a top-flight spot.

  • Only the WSL2 champions are guaranteed promotion to the WSL.
  • Teams finishing second and third will compete in a new pre-qualifying match.
  • Watford will host Burnley on Friday to open the season.

The Women's Super League 2 season is set to commence on Friday, 4 September 2026, with Watford hosting Burnley. This season introduces a tweaked format for promotion following the expansion of the WSL earlier this summer.

Under the new rules, only the WSL2 champions will secure automatic promotion to the top flight. The teams finishing second and third will participate in a new pre-qualifying match. The winner of this match will then face the WSL's second-bottom side in an end-of-season promotion/relegation playoff decider.

Among the 12 competing teams, Newcastle United, who finished sixth last season, are predicted to finish first. Bristol City, who were fourth last term, are predicted to secure second place, while Leicester City, relegated from the WSL, are predicted to finish fourth.

Why this matters: The revised promotion and relegation structure introduces new challenges and opportunities for teams vying for a place in the top-tier Women's Super League.
