Korean-Chinese artist Woo Jin Joo is set to open her first solo exhibition, "Bodily Inbetweenness," at London's Ruup & Form gallery. The show is scheduled to open during Shoreditch Design Week.
Joo, who moved to the UK 12 years ago to study at Central Saint Martins and the Royal Academy, creates surface embroideries and sculptural 3D creatures. Her work is inspired by Korean myth, philosophy, and the relationship between humans and the natural world.
The artist often uses discarded objects found in London, guided by the Korean folklore and shamanism concept that inanimate objects can become spirited beings known as dokkaebi. For her solo show, Joo will explore human emotions through powerful, 5ft-tall figures that emerge from walls.
One sculpture from this series, "I Hear Things Existing With Me," was previously featured at London’s Collect Craft Fair in February.
Joo is also preparing for another exhibition at the Harley Foundation in Nottinghamshire later this year.
