Wyndham Clark fends off Rory McIlroy challenge to win BMW Championship

Wyndham Clark secured victory at the BMW Championship in Missouri, despite a strong fightback from Rory McIlroy on the final day.

  • Wyndham Clark finished 17 under par to win the BMW Championship.
  • Rory McIlroy finished four shots behind Clark at 13 under par.
  • Clark held a five-shot lead going into the final day, which McIlroy erased with seven holes remaining.

American golfer Wyndham Clark has claimed the BMW Championship title in Missouri, holding off a determined challenge from Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy.

Clark, who started the final day with a five-shot lead, saw his advantage disappear as McIlroy drew level with seven holes left to play. However, McIlroy was unable to capitalise on opportunities to move ahead, and successive birdies from Clark allowed him to post a fourth-round 71 and finish the tournament 17 under par.

McIlroy, who ended the day one under par, finished four shots behind Clark at 13 under. Clark told CBS Sports, "I'm one of the best players in the world. Everyone gives me a hard time and roots for other people, but I've come into my own. It's my best season yet coming off my worst year."

McIlroy, a back-to-back Masters champion, acknowledged Clark's performance, stating, "I had my chances, but Wyndham stepped up. The way he played the last three holes, he showed a lot of character."
