Microsoft has raised the prices of Xbox consoles in Europe and the UK. The Xbox Series S 512GB model has increased from £299.99 to £429.99, while the Xbox Series X 1TB model has risen from £499.99 to £669.99. The company attributes these price adjustments to higher storage and memory costs, with Samsung anticipating a worsening situation through 2027.
This development occurs as the games industry grapples with the increasing expense of visual hyperrealism. Creating super-realistic visuals is a costly and complex aspect of game development, leading to extended development periods. For instance, GTA VI reportedly took at least eight years to develop and is rumoured to have cost between $1 billion and $2 billion.
Asha Sharma, the new head of Xbox, recently highlighted Minecraft and Candy Crush Saga as potential growth areas for the console. These titles do not rely on hyper-realistic visuals, which have been a long-standing focus for gaming consoles and PCs.
The industry has seen a significant number of redundancies in the last two years, suggesting that its current model may not be sustainable. An increased emphasis on graphical fidelity contributes to greater costs and creative caution.
