Yellow rain warnings are in force across large parts of the UK today, with the Met Office warning of localised flooding and travel chaos as heavy downpours sweep the nation.
The warnings cover England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, with forecasters predicting prolonged heavy rain over the next 24 to 48 hours. Surface water flooding and hazardous driving conditions are expected, whilst public transport services face delays and cancellations.
England's South West, parts of the Midlands and northern regions are amongst the worst-hit areas, with Wales, western Scotland and Northern Ireland also bracing for significant rainfall. Despite mild temperatures of 8°C to 12°C, the sheer volume of expected rain remains the primary concern.
Moderate winds of 10-20 mph will accompany the downpours, with stronger gusts likely in exposed coastal areas. The Met Office warns this combination could worsen driving conditions and trigger localised power cuts.
The unsettled weather stems from Atlantic low-pressure systems bringing moisture-laden air across Britain. Whilst yellow warnings indicate potential impacts rather than guaranteed widespread severe flooding, residents are urged to remain vigilant.
Authorities advise checking local flood alerts, clearing drains where possible, and avoiding non-essential travel. Motorists who must venture out should allow extra time and drive carefully, watching for standing water and reduced visibility.
