Heavy rain is set to batter southwestern England today, with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning as up to 50mm could fall in just hours across parts of Gloucestershire, Bristol and Wiltshire.
The warning remains active from 11am until 10pm, with forecasters warning residents to brace for potential disruption and challenging conditions. Most areas can expect 20-30mm of rainfall, but isolated pockets over higher ground could see 40-50mm in a matter of hours.
The persistent downpours raise the risk of localised surface water flooding, creating difficult driving conditions with spray and standing water on roads. Journey times are likely to increase, whilst bus and train services may face delays.
Though widespread severe flooding isn't expected, some homes and businesses in low-lying areas could be affected by localised flooding. Power supplies may also face temporary interruptions.
Drivers, particularly on motorways and A-roads, should reduce speed, maintain greater distances and watch for hazards such as fallen leaves and debris washed onto carriageways. Pedestrians and cyclists face similar risks, especially near drains and gutters where water may accumulate.
Temperatures will remain mild for the time of year at 10-12°C, with moderate winds of 10-15mph that could gust higher in exposed areas during heavier downpours, worsening driving conditions.
Elsewhere across the UK, Scotland and Northern Ireland are seeing mixed cloud and scattered showers with temperatures around 8-10°C. Wales faces similar conditions to southwestern England as rain moves in from the west.
The Met Office urges everyone to stay updated with local forecasts and warnings throughout the day.
