The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for 80mph winds that could batter parts of the UK, threatening power cuts and widespread travel disruption across multiple regions.
Western coastal areas and higher ground face the strongest gusts, with winds reaching up to 80mph in exposed locations. Inland areas will still experience considerable winds of 50-60mph during the warning period.
Scotland's west and northern Isles are expected to bear the brunt of the severe weather. Northern Ireland, parts of Wales, and north-west England also fall within the yellow warning area, with residents advised to prepare for challenging conditions.
The strong winds pose significant risks to daily life. Power cuts are likely as overhead lines face damage from falling trees and debris. Transport networks including road, rail, air, and ferry services will face delays or cancellations. Motorists in high-sided vehicles are urged to exercise extreme caution or postpone non-essential journeys.
Coastal communities face additional dangers from large waves and spray overtopping sea defences. The Met Office advises residents to secure loose outdoor items like garden furniture and bins, which could become dangerous projectiles. People should check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours and keep torches and charged mobile phones ready in case of power cuts.
