Young monkey escapes Highland Wildlife Park, second incident in two years

A young Japanese macaque named Luka has escaped from Highland Wildlife Park, prompting a search by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS). This is the second such incident at the park in two years.

  • A young Japanese macaque, Luka, has disappeared overnight from Highland Wildlife Park.
  • RZSS is searching for Luka using techniques including a thermal imaging drone.
  • Another Japanese macaque, Honshu, escaped from the same park in January 2024 and was at large for over five days.

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) is searching for a young Japanese macaque named Luka, who disappeared overnight from the Highland Wildlife Park near Aviemore. The park is located within the Cairngorms National Park.

RZSS stated it does not know how or when Luka escaped. Darren McGarry, head of animal care, said that efforts are underway to locate the macaque using various techniques, including a thermal imaging drone. He also noted that male primates being forced out of a group is not uncommon due to complex group dynamics.

This incident follows a similar escape in January 2024, when another Japanese macaque, Honshu, fled the park and remained at large for more than five days. Honshu was later captured and moved to Edinburgh Zoo. Following that incident, RZSS said fencing was improved and different management protocols were introduced.

RZSS chief executive David Field believes Luka is likely attempting to return to his enclosure. While the macaque is not considered dangerous, the public is advised not to approach him and to contact 07769165117 with any sightings.

What this means for you: Members of the public are advised not to approach the macaque and to contact 07769165117 with any details of a sighting.
