A group of 16 young people developed ideas to address the effects of climate change during a hackathon held on Tuesday in Ipswich. The event, hosted by Seeds of Hope and Change at the Jerwood Dancehouse, involved participants creating posters with solutions for issues including light pollution, wildfires, damage to oceans, and poor water quality.
One participant, 16-year-old Maryanne, stated that the aim was for people to be aware of major issues such as ocean pollution. Another participant, 17-year-old Baveen, mentioned their group focused on how cities and the sky affect people and wildlife, proposing ideas like using low-intensity bulbs and motion sensors in street lights.
The hackathon was run by ambassadors from the youth-led campaigning organisation #iWill. Alex Harrison, an #iWill ambassador, highlighted the purpose of reminding young people that personal actions can make a difference in the face of climate change.
The event is part of a free touring exhibition that runs until 4 October, featuring 24 pop-up panels with information and environmental case studies on the impact of climate change globally.
