Youth violence and tension have reportedly increased in the south London boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark, according to Metropolitan Police officers. Recorded gun crime in Southwark rose by 23% in the year ending August 2026 compared to the previous year, while Lambeth saw a 22% increase. Additionally, Lambeth experienced a 9% rise in knife injuries reported to police between April and August this year compared to the same period in 2025.
Detective Constable Faisal El Issaoui and PC Zoe Ticehurst, serving on the Metropolitan Police's proactive offender targeting and management team, highlighted that some children in these areas are highly vulnerable to local gangs. They noted that summer, when schools are closed, is a prime recruiting time for gangs, who may offer vulnerable children money to hold or carry items.
Police cannot be certain what has driven the increase in violence but launched several targeted operations over the summer. These operations led to more than 700 arrests and the seizure of over 40 weapons, as well as Class A drugs. Officers also indicated that social media is fuelling the violence, with gangs live-streaming incursions into rival territory and treating violence as a game to score points.
Detective Superintendent Gareth Gilbert stated that children as young as 10 are being lured into gangs, making early intervention by officers crucial. Officers in plainclothes attempt to engage with families and divert young people towards other agencies for education or apprenticeships, but face challenges, including parental denial or feelings of powerlessness against gang influence.
