Great Britain's Zoe Backstedt, 21, delivered a superb performance to secure a silver medal in the women's time trial at the UCI World Road Championships in Montreal. The Welsh rider chose to compete at elite level rather than defend her under-23 title.
Backstedt finished 40.11 seconds behind defending champion Marlen Reusser of Switzerland, who retained her crown with a winning time of 50 minutes 24.44 seconds. Reusser, the final rider to start, overcame an early deficit to claim her second time-trial gold.
Backstedt's achievement marks only the third British medal in this discipline, following Emma Pooley's gold in 2010 and bronze in 2011. The Briton is a former world junior and under-23 time trial champion, and won both the women's road race and time trial at this year's British Championships.
