A 96-year-old sports volunteer, Moira Cross, is hoping to return to Birmingham for the Invictus Games next summer. Mrs Cross, who lives in London, previously volunteered at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, a city she describes as one of her favourites.
Mrs Cross has a history of volunteering at major sporting events, including the London 2012 Olympics, Rio 2016, and Paris 2024. She also worked as an athlete's host at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, where she saw Simple Minds perform.
Inspired to get involved after the death of her husband in 2010 to combat loneliness, Mrs Cross also enjoys nights out clubbing in places like Solihull or Digbeth. She also attends Zumba four times a week.
Birmingham will host the Invictus Games in 2027, marking the first time the event has been held in the UK since 2014. Mrs Cross has also expressed an interest in volunteering at the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics, which would be 40 years after her son, Martin, won a gold medal there in rowing.
