Aaron Sorkin's 'The Social Reckoning' Explores Facebook Whistleblower Story

A new film, 'The Social Reckoning,' written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, focuses on the challenge to Facebook by whistleblower Frances Haugen and reporter Jeff Horwitz.

  • The film, a 'sequel of sorts' to 'The Social Network,' is set in 2021 and features Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg.
  • It depicts how Facebook's algorithm was allegedly changed to boost engagement through 'rage bait and hate speech' due to falling revenue.
  • The movie suggests Facebook's failure to fact-check political ads contributed to a surge in extremist groups and the Capitol riots.

Sixteen years after 'The Social Network', Aaron Sorkin has returned to direct his own script for 'The Social Reckoning'. The film focuses on events in 2021, when Facebook's empire was challenged by whistleblower-employee Frances Haugen and Wall Street Journal investigative reporter Jeff Horwitz.

The narrative suggests that Mark Zuckerberg, portrayed by Jeremy Strong, changed Facebook's algorithm due to falling revenue, leading to engagement being 'supercharged by rage bait and hate speech, malice and envy'. The film also indicates that Facebook did not fact-check political ads, which reportedly contributed to a nationwide surge in extremist groups, teen bullying, and played a role in the Capitol riots.

Mikey Madison plays Frances Haugen, while Jeremy Allen White portrays Jeff Horwitz. Mark Zuckerberg's role is described as almost a cameo, with Strong's portrayal depicting him as 'weirdly slow talking' and resembling a 'Thunderbird puppet'.
