Elon Musk has chosen to integrate rival Anthropic's AI models into parts of Grok, despite significant investment in developing his own AI technology. Musk stated on Wednesday that the Grok bot will utilise the “best back-end model for any given task”.
This approach will include Anthropic’s latest Claude Opus chatbot, alongside other services such as image generator Midjourney and AI music platform Suno. Musk explained on X that the aim is to use “Whatever is most likely to give you the best outcome”.
This decision marks a shift for Musk, who launched xAI in 2023 to directly compete with companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. Instead of relying solely on its own technology, Grok can now direct tasks to external models deemed most suitable for a specific request.
The move also provides a commercial boost for Anthropic, which is reportedly preparing for a potential stock market listing. Data from last month indicated that Anthropic represented as much as half of UK businesses’ spending with major AI providers in September, based on Capital on Tap transactions from over 300,000 British small businesses.
