Fashion writer Jess Cartner-Morley has highlighted the difficulty in styling leather jackets, noting that even Lucinda Chambers, a former Vogue fashion director and co-curator of Collagerie, struggles with them. Chambers, described as one of London's best-dressed women, reportedly finds leather jackets tricky.
This autumn, fashion is emphasising leather jackets, particularly those with a funnel neck, generous proportions, and zips or buttons that fasten high. This style can be traced back to Phoebe Philo's first collection for her own label in 2023, where dramatic funnel-neck outerwear was a signature feature, and has since become widespread.
Styling advice suggests that a high funnel neck can make the jacket appear more elegant, while a generous cut may be less overwhelming than a tight fit. For hair, a ponytail or messy bun is recommended, as long hair may not sit well outside a leather jacket. When choosing what to wear on the bottom half, a skirt or soft trousers are suggested over leather skirts, trousers, or jeans to avoid a 'rugged' or 'upholstered' look. Considering colours other than black, such as burgundy or chocolate, may also make the jacket less dominant.
