Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for US Senate in Michigan, has embraced Donald Trump’s suggestion that they represent “VERY DIFFERENT” versions of the US. El-Sayed pledged to fight inequality, stating that the president is “making billions of dollars off of you.”
On Saturday night, Trump posted an image on his Truth Social platform featuring himself and Melania Trump next to a photo of El-Sayed, who is Muslim, and his wife, Sarah Jukaku, wearing a hijab. The caption read, “Two VERY DIFFERENT America’s [sic].” When asked about the post on Sunday, El-Sayed told CNN, “Yeah, he’s right.”
El-Sayed, an epidemiologist, secured the Democratic primary win for US Senate in Michigan this week. This sets the stage for a general election campaign against former US representative Mike Rogers, a Republican, in the swing state. His victory is considered crucial for Democrats hoping to regain control of the Senate from Republicans.
Former US president Barack Obama spoke with El-Sayed after his primary win, which is seen as an early indication of support for his campaign. El-Sayed told NBC News it was “a really good conversation about what we need to do to be able to win.”
