Aldi has been identified as the cheapest supermarket for a mixed basket of 92 items in August 2026, according to a study by Which?. The basket, which included both branded and own-brand groceries, totalled £159.36 at Aldi.
For full-range supermarkets, Asda was found to be the cheapest in the same Which? August study, with its 92-item basket costing £185.21. Sainsbury's with a Nectar card was a close second at £185.55.
Separately, The Grocer's 18 September 2026 survey, which compares a different list of 33 products, placed Asda first among the five full-range chains it regularly covers. This survey found Asda's winning total to be £76.79, narrowly beating Tesco.
A different Which? study focusing on 220 branded products in August put Asda first at £771.27. This study excluded Aldi and Lidl due to their different product ranges.
