Alice Capsey to wicketkeep for England despite limited experience

Alice Capsey will take on wicketkeeping duties for England in the upcoming one-day international series against Ireland, despite having only performed the role once in a professional match.

  • Alice Capsey will be England's wicketkeeper in the ODI series against Ireland this week.
  • Capsey has only kept wicket once in a professional match, for South East Stars in 2020.
  • Regular keeper Amy Jones has been rested for the series.

Alice Capsey is set to debut as England's wicketkeeper in the one-day international series against Ireland this week. The 22-year-old has only previously kept wicket once in a professional game, during a 50-over match for South East Stars in 2020.

Capsey, who was a wicketkeeper throughout much of her junior career, was considered as a back-up option for regular keeper Amy Jones during this summer's T20 World Cup. Jones has been rested for the upcoming series against Ireland.

Capsey has been increasing her wicketkeeping training, including gym sessions to strengthen her legs, and has worked with former England wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor. She also kept wicket in a warm-up match against India before the T20 World Cup.

Why this matters: This move could provide a back-up option for Amy Jones and potentially create space for another batter in England's top order.
