Football icon Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football with Argentina, bringing an end to a remarkable career spanning 207 caps. The 39-year-old, who debuted for Argentina in 2005, secured a World Cup victory in 2022 and was a runner-up in 2014 and this summer. He also lifted two Copa América titles.
In a statement, Messi expressed the deep personal impact of his decision, saying, “It was a decision that hurt – and still hurts deep down – but I understand that the time has come.” He added that he always gave his all for the national jersey, aiming to bring joy and pride to Argentina through football.
Messi revealed he penned his retirement statement on 21 July, two days after the World Cup final. He also stated that the passing of his father, Jorge, last month, solidified his belief that it was the right moment to publish the statement and conclude his international career.
The star forward currently plays for Inter Miami, where his contract is set to run until 2028.
