Authorities in Lahore, Pakistan, have suspended all 78 police officers and staff at the Ghaziabad police station following the alleged rape of a 20-year-old woman with intellectual disabilities. This action is described as one of the country's largest disciplinary measures against its police force.
The woman's family stated she disappeared from the street before returning home distressed and alleging sexual assault at the station. She claims an assistant sub-inspector apprehended her, took her to the station, and raped her on the second floor.
The accused officer has been arrested and is currently under criminal investigation for rape. Faisal Kamran, Lahore's deputy inspector general of police (operations), stated that all personnel were suspended for failing in their responsibility to prevent and report wrongdoing within the station.
Mr Kamran noted that no officer questioned why the assistant sub-inspector brought the woman to the station without any female police personnel present. He added that the gender crime wing is investigating the case, and culprits will be dismissed.
