Four men have been arrested after illegal meat was seized during a police raid on an unapproved meat cutting plant in Dudley. Approximately 4.25 tonnes of meat were subsequently removed from the market.
The operation involved the National Food Crime Unit (NFCU) of the Food Standards Agency (FSA), West Midlands Police, HMRC, and representatives from the Home Office. Will Simpson, Regional Intelligence Officer at the FSA's NFCU, stated that the operation is part of ongoing work to disrupt the illegal meat trade, and a criminal investigation has been launched.
The FSA has issued a Food Alert for Action, an official notice requiring local enforcement or specific authority intervention. According to the FSA, meat illegally placed into the food chain bypasses rigorous safety and hygiene checks, which means it could carry diseases and contaminants that may put consumers at risk.
Councillor Patrick Harley commented that the sale of illegal meat bypasses strict safety and hygiene standards. He thanked the agencies involved for their collaborative work.
