George Desmond Kamurasi, the 36-year-old captain and goalkeeper for amateur football club South East Dons, could be named the new king of the Tooro Kingdom in Uganda. Kamurasi is currently in Uganda for the funeral of his cousin, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died last week in the US aged 34.
It has been widely reported that Kamurasi has been chosen as the region's new king. As is tradition, the successor will be named before the burial, which is expected to take place before the weekend.
Kamurasi, a direct descendant of the Babiito clan, has not yet commented on the reports. However, he posted on social media platform X, appealing for patience and space. He stated, "I appeal to all Ugandans to remain patient and allow the Omusuuga and the committee to perform their duties in accordance with our cultural traditions for enthroning a new Omukama."
The Tooro Kingdom, located in western Uganda, holds significant cultural influence despite not having political power. The Royal Select Committee is tasked with confirming a new king, considering lineage and relatives of the deceased monarch.
