Online retail giant Amazon has cemented its presence in Northamptonshire with the official opening of a new, highly advanced fulfilment centre near junction 15 of the M1. Known as STN6, the vast facility boasts an internal footprint of 2.2 million square feet across four floors, equipped with cutting-edge technology, some of which is new to the UK, designed to facilitate next-day and even same-day deliveries.
Alongside this significant launch, Amazon has also unveiled plans for a second logistics hub in Kettering, less than 20 miles away. This 900,000 square foot facility is slated for completion by autumn of this year and will serve as a critical point for processing approximately 20 million items per week, quickly dispatching goods from suppliers to carriers or directly to customers. The combined investment for both the Northampton and Kettering sites totals £1 billion, forming part of Amazon's wider £40 billion commitment to the UK between 2025 and 2027.
The strategic choice of Northamptonshire for this substantial investment is largely attributed to its prime geographical location and robust infrastructure. The county's central position offers direct access to a vast consumer base, intersected by major arteries such as the M1 and A14, and in close proximity to the M40 and M6. Furthermore, the presence of major freight terminals like Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal (DIRFT) and Northampton Gateway significantly enhances its appeal for logistics operations. According to Clare Bottle of the UK Warehousing Association, the county's history as a trade and distribution hub, coupled with its ability to reach almost all of the UK within a single HGV driving shift, made it an ideal candidate.
This double investment is projected to create around 4,000 new jobs once both facilities are fully operational. One thousand roles are already active at the Northampton site, with another thousand expected to be filled by the end of the year. The Kettering facility is anticipated to generate a further 2,000 positions. While this brings new opportunities, it has also led to changes for some existing Amazon staff, with around 500 employees from the Marston Gate site near Brogborough given the option to transfer to the new Northampton facility or other locations.
Beyond direct employment, the investment is expected to bring broader economic benefits to Northamptonshire. The new warehouses will contribute significantly through business rates, supporting local services and the wider economy. Industry experts highlight that modern warehousing roles, particularly with major investors like Amazon, are increasingly technically focused, offering potential for social mobility and career development beyond entry-level positions. However, unions like GMB have acknowledged the human impact on employees affected by site closures, particularly those with local family commitments.
The close proximity of the Northampton and Kettering facilities, despite serving different logistical functions, will enable Amazon to enhance the speed and efficiency of customer order fulfilment, while also optimising its own operational costs. This strategic expansion underscores the increasing demand for rapid delivery services and the critical role of advanced logistics infrastructure in meeting consumer expectations in the digital age.
