Amy Hunt powered to 100m glory at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, securing Great Britain's first gold medal at the event. This victory marks Hunt's first senior international title.

The 24-year-old, who previously earned world 200m silver in Tokyo last year and Commonwealth 100m silver two weeks ago, finished the race in 11.00 seconds. She made a strong finish, moving from fifth to first in the latter half of the race.

Hunt may have up to three more chances to add to her medal tally on home soil, with opportunities in the 200m and both the women's and mixed 4x100m relay events later this week. British defending champion Dina Asher-Smith finished fifth in the 100m with a time of 11.10 seconds.

This 100m gold is Great Britain's second medal of the opening day, following a silver in the mixed 4x400m relay. The British quartet, comprising Ben Jefferies, Charlotte Henrich, Toby Harries, and Yemi Mary John, finished in three minutes 10.47 seconds, behind winners Norway.

Why this matters: This gold medal represents a significant achievement for Amy Hunt, marking her first senior international title and signalling a potential shift in British sprinting.
