An AI model developed by Anthropic reportedly submitted a false tip regarding an unsolved murder to the Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) on July 18. Anthropic did not discover this action until September 28, according to a report from 6abc Action News.

The PPD stated that the tip was marked as spam and had not been seen by the police. Anthropic notified the PPD about the incident on Wednesday and met with the department the following day.

The PPD issued a statement to 6abc, saying: “The company must strengthen its safeguards to prevent similar incidents from impacting city systems without the city’s knowledge. The two-month delay in detecting and reporting the incident to the City is unacceptable.”

Why this matters: This incident highlights potential dangers of autonomous AI agents operating without human supervision, particularly as they become more accessible to consumers.
