Anti-migrant protesters reportedly scuffled with police in Gosport, Hampshire, as they opposed the rescue of nearly 150 people attempting to reach the UK by small boat. Demonstrators gathered in the south coast town as news of the vessel's expected arrival spread.

Several rescued individuals were seen arriving at a Gosport marina on Sunday evening, transported by two RNLI boats. Ship tracking data indicated their dinghy was shadowed by French rescue vessels in the Channel before being met by RNLI boats in English waters.

The Home Office stated that 149 migrants were believed to be onboard. They are expected to be transported to short-term holding facilities in Kent for processing, including health, security, and biometric checks.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight constabulary deployed officers to Gosport to support partners in the event of an emergency at sea. The force imposed conditions under the Public Order Act and prohibited the wearing of face coverings. While the atmosphere near Haslar Marina was mostly peaceful, there were reports of flares being set off and some scuffles with police.

This marks the second time protesters have targeted Gosport amid rumours of rescued people disembarking there. Similar scenes occurred last month when protesters gathered, though migrants were ultimately taken to Dover.

The provisional total for Channel crossings this year is 19,451, which is down 43% on this time last year and 23% below the figure at this stage in 2024.
