A 20-year-old US Marine, Lance Corporal Devin Jacob Ballard, has been arrested by Japanese police in Okinawa in connection with the alleged murder of a woman in a hotel room. Police stated that an investigation is underway, and Ballard is in Japanese custody as the alleged crime was unrelated to official military duties.
Anna Yagi, 39, was discovered dead early on 3 October in a hotel room in Naha, according to Okinawa prefectural police. Local media, citing police, have reported that Yagi appeared to have been strangled with a cord. Security footage allegedly shows a man believed to be the suspect entering the hotel with the woman and later leaving alone with her belongings.
Ballard was assigned to III Marine Expeditionary Force and stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma in Ginowan City. The arrest has reignited decades of frustration among many Okinawa locals regarding crimes involving US military personnel on the island.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has registered an official protest with Washington. Following news of the suspected murder, approximately 100 people protested in Naha and Tokyo, with others expressing outrage on social media.
