Apple has today introduced its first foldable device, named the iPhone Duo, at its "Surprise and Shine" iPhone event held in Cupertino. This device is the first marquee product launched under the company's new CEO, John Ternus.

The company stated that the new device was "Inspired by the versatility of iPad" and demonstrated its use unfolded in a vertical mode. The iPhone Duo features a wider form factor, which Apple suggests could improve the aspect ratio for video viewing when unfolded.

While foldables currently account for less than 2% of overall smartphone shipments, according to analytics firm Counterpoint, the iPhone Duo could significantly impact the market. Counterpoint has indicated that the Duo could garner up to 25% market share by the end of the year.

Why this matters: The launch of Apple's first foldable device could significantly increase demand for this form factor in the smartphone market.
