The apprenticeship system is reportedly confusing, making it difficult for many to access opportunities, according to a finding by the Fabian Society. This view is supported by Dr Gillian McIver, who works in youth employment.
Students often express a desire to pursue apprenticeships instead of university, but finding suitable options is challenging. Even with specialist staff assistance, navigating the process remains difficult.
Dr McIver also noted that many employers do not appear to be fully informed about how the system operates or the available support. She suggests that simplifying the process is crucial to making apprenticeships more accessible.
Don Macdonald proposed a scheme similar to the Future Jobs Fund, which operated between 2009 and 2011. This initiative reportedly created real jobs, provided work experience, and developed skills, generating a net societal benefit of approximately £7,750 per participant.
