Plans to launch a new batch of vocational GCSEs are prompting questions about how they will differ from the approximately 50 similar courses already available. The move comes despite an independent curriculum review last year recommending a moratorium on new technical awards, unless there is an "exceptionally compelling" case for change.
Last year, about 170,000 16-year-olds in England and Wales took a Level 2 BTEC qualification alongside GCSEs, with health and sport and leisure being the most popular. These qualifications are also studied by post-16 students in further education colleges.
Practical issues for schools are also a concern, particularly for new subjects like construction. There are already many vacancies for construction-related college teaching positions, raising questions about where a workforce for teaching 14- to 16-year-olds building skills would come from.
