The court martial involving Colonel Samantha Shepherd and Major James Hook has concluded at Catterick Military Court, marking the end of the legal process in the case related to Jaysley-Louise's death. The proceedings concluded today, 16 September 2026.
Defence Secretary Rt Hon Wes Streeting MP expressed his thoughts for Jaysley-Louise's family and commended their determination in pursuing change within the Armed Forces. He stated that the Army has accepted all findings from the Service Inquiry and has responded to recommendations aimed at improving Service life.
Brigadier Melissa Emmett, Head of Army Personnel Services Group, speaking on behalf of the Army, reiterated condolences to Jaysley-Louise's family. She acknowledged the impact of the legal process on all involved and stated that the Army has acted on findings from the service inquiry, inquest, and subsequent investigations to drive cultural improvements.
The Defence Secretary noted that significant reforms have been introduced since Jaysley-Louise’s death, including commissioning the first-ever Armed Forces sexualised behaviour and sexual harassment survey and appointing the first Armed Forces Commissioner. He encouraged anyone who has experienced a sexual offence to seek support and report it.
