Arsenal's struggles in the Women's Super League continued today as they drew at home with Birmingham, extending their winless run to five matches. The result, which saw boos from the crowd at the final whistle, leaves Arsenal on six points from six matches and marks the club's longest winless streak in WSL history.
Birmingham opened the scoring in the second half through Océane Hurtré. Olivia Smith's spectacular strike in the 66th minute, curled from outside the area, secured an equaliser for Arsenal, but they were unable to find a winning goal.
Coach Renée Slegers acknowledged the team's defensive shortcomings, stating, "There was one player we needed to stop and that was Hurtré. But she came through in a fast break and a counter, we don’t defend that well enough." Despite the disappointment, Slegers remains focused on the next game, calling it "always the next opportunity."
Arsenal now sit eighth in the table, nine points adrift of leaders Manchester City, who have played one game fewer.
