British number one Arthur Fery's US Open debut concluded with a first-round defeat to Italian 13th seed Lorenzo Musetti. Fery, 24, was unable to replicate his Wimbledon performance, where he reached the semi-finals.
Musetti, who was a quarter-finalist 12 months ago, secured a 6-3 6-3 7-5 victory. Fery, ranked world number 33, had narrowly missed out on a seeded position for the tournament.
The match, contested in hot and humid conditions after a rain delay, saw Musetti break Fery twice in the third set to complete his win. This marks Fery's second appearance at an overseas major, following his Australian Open campaign earlier this year.
