British No 1 Arthur Fery's US Open main draw debut concluded with a straight-sets defeat to Lorenzo Musetti. The Italian secured a 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 victory, comprehensively outplaying Fery in their first-round match.
Fery, who is now ranked 33rd in the world, struggled against Musetti's heavy topspin and defensive play. Despite a strong start, Fery's serve faltered, allowing Musetti to take control of the baseline.
In other US Open action, Elena Rybakina advanced to the second round after a 6-3, 6-2 win over 17-year-old American wildcard Thea Frodin. Rybakina appeared comfortable on court following a foot injury sustained at the Cincinnati Open.
Rybakina currently holds the No 1 spot in the live rankings. She could become the official world No 1 for the first time in her career if she reaches the semi-finals, or if Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, and Coco Gauff do not win the tournament.
