Fery admits 'plenty to work on' after US Open exit

Britain's Arthur Fery lost to 13th seed Lorenzo Musetti 6-3 6-3 7-5 in the first round of the US Open, ending his debut at Flushing Meadows.

  • Fery lost 6-3 6-3 7-5 to Lorenzo Musetti in the first round.
  • He cited his serve as a key weakness, saying it 'really let me down'.
  • Fery rose from outside the top 200 to world number 33 in a year.

Arthur Fery admitted he has 'plenty to work on' after his US Open debut ended in a straight-sets defeat to Italian 13th seed Lorenzo Musetti.

The 24-year-old British number one lost 6-3 6-3 7-5 on Grandstand Stadium, a match he said was a useful gauge despite the comprehensive scoreline.

'I know what I have to work on,' Fery said. 'My serve really let me down today, which is not usually the case, but I've been struggling a little bit to find my rhythm on the serve.'

Fery, who reached the Wimbledon semi-finals as a wildcard this summer and his first ATP final in North Carolina last week, admitted his preparation was affected by that run but said he would not change it.

'Would I sign for these past two weeks? Probably, to be honest. It's a lot of ranking points, it's a first ATP final, so it's good,' he added.

Why this matters: Fery's rise to British number one and world number 33 marks a significant breakthrough, and his early exit highlights the gap he still needs to close against top-tier players.

What this means for you: Fery's defeat means he will not progress further in the US Open, but his ranking points from recent runs may boost his seeding in future tournaments.
