August Bank Holiday: Rail disruptions on key routes due to engineering works

Planned engineering works will affect several major rail routes over the August bank holiday weekend, including services into London King's Cross.

  • No trains will run between Peterborough and London King's Cross on Sunday, 30 August.
  • Rail replacement buses will operate between Stafford and Wolverhampton on 30 August.
  • Buses will replace trains on routes including Wrexham to Bidston and Wrexham to Shrewsbury until 30 August.

Rail passengers are advised to check their journeys ahead of the August bank holiday weekend due to planned engineering works across the country. While most rail services will operate as normal, some key routes will experience disruption.

On Sunday, 30 August, there will be no trains between Peterborough and London King's Cross. This is to allow for the installation of new in-train signalling technology. Passengers can use a limited number of LNER services via Bedford to London St Pancras, or rail replacement buses.

Also on 30 August, services between Stafford and Wolverhampton will be suspended for improvements to the overhead power supply, with rail replacement buses available. Longer-term projects include bus replacements between Wrexham and Bidston until Sunday, 30 August, and between Wrexham and Shrewsbury until 30 August. Normal service on these routes is expected to resume on Monday, 31 August.

Further disruptions include buses replacing trains between Leeds, York, and Selby throughout the bank holiday weekend due to ongoing upgrade work. Track improvement work will also mean no trains between Dumfries and Barrhead, and between Kilmarnock and Ayr, from Saturday, 29 August until 14 September.

What this means for you: If you are travelling by train over the August bank holiday weekend, you should check your journey details in advance due to potential disruptions from planned engineering works.
