The Australian bowling quartet of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, and Nathan Lyon were instrumental in taking control of the match. Captain Cummins took three wickets, while Starc, Hazlewood, and Lyon each claimed two wickets.
Steve Smith also contributed significantly, taking three catches during South Africa's innings. His third catch, dismissing David Bedingham, saw him surpass Joe Root to become the non-wicketkeeper with the most catches in Test history, reaching 223.
Australia's bowlers, who have taken 607 wickets when playing together as a quartet, are now set to press their advantage over the final two days of the Test, despite bad light halting play early.
