On Friday, 9 October 2026, the US sanctioned the International Criminal Court (ICC). This action was followed by an announcement of a deal with Russia to purchase diesel.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that companies have a six-month period to wind down their ties with the ICC. He also indicated that US allies must control the court, saying, “Either the ICC will end its threats, or we will end the ICC.”
The US President blames Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy facilities for high diesel costs. The Moscow deal is reportedly unlikely to produce significant shipments, as the Russian military runs on diesel.
The Nobel committee announced on the same day that Navi Pillay, a former ICC judge, is this year’s peace laureate. Pillay chaired a UN commission that concluded last year that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza.
