Ian Berry, the British photojournalist who documented significant global events, has died at 92. Berry gained international recognition for his photographs of the Sharpeville massacre in South Africa on 21 March 1960.
During a protest against apartheid pass laws in a Transvaal township, Berry was the sole journalist present when heavy gunfire erupted without warning. His images captured the aftermath, where dozens of demonstrators were killed and hundreds injured, many shot as they fled.
Berry's career spanned numerous conflicts and disasters, including the Congo crisis, the Vietnam War, the Aberfan disaster in 1966, and the 1967 Six-Day War. He became a full member of Magnum Photos in 1967 and was known for his ability to capture human moments and individual stories.
