Train drivers for Avanti West Coast have secured a 3.6% pay rise following a threat of strike action on busy UK routes, including the London-Manchester line.
The agreement was reached on Saturday between Avanti West Coast and the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (Aslef) union. This marks the first deal of its kind to be approved during Andy Burnham's premiership.
In addition to the pay increase, the deal includes time and a half pay for working Sundays and a payment of £720 for drivers working a fifth day in the week. Avanti West Coast operates services to cities such as Birmingham, Glasgow, and Liverpool.
The government stated it has “prioritised resolving the rail union disputes, improving services for passengers and saving hundreds of millions in lost revenue to ease the burden on taxpayers.” A Department for Transport spokesperson added that they are “pleased to see Avanti West Coast work with Aslef to enable a fair and affordable settlement to keep Britain’s railways moving and prevent disruption for passengers.”
