Avanti West Coast (AWC) services will be nationalised from 7 March 2027, following an announcement by the Transport Secretary. This decision aims to bring services on the West Coast Main Line into public ownership, focusing on passenger interests rather than private sector shareholders.
The government states that nationalisation will address fragmentation and tackle infrastructure issues on the route, which have contributed to frequent disruption, delays, and cancellations for passengers. An improvement plan will support the nationalisation, including a dedicated £10 million boost for power and signalling maintenance by the end of 2027.
Passengers can expect changes such as faster and more reliable services through timetable adjustments, particularly for routes in and out of Manchester, starting from December 2026. There will also be a £50 million investment at Euston station over the next three years, with an initial £11 million for seating, waiting areas, and refurbished toilets. A further £10 million will be invested in other stations on the West Coast Main Line by the end of 2027 to improve comfort and cleanliness.
Additionally, the deployment of low earth orbit satellite technology is planned to provide more stable internet connection, faster and more reliable wifi, and 5G coverage onboard trains.
