Former Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta has retired from playing football after a 20-year career, stating he needs a break to enter a "different stage of life." The 37-year-old, who spent last season at Sevilla, explained he no longer has the energy to commit fully to an entire season.
Azpilicueta, known for his leadership at Chelsea, recently collected a diploma in global football sport directorship through the PFA Business School. This adds to his academic achievements, which include an MBA in business management from the Berlin School of Business and Innovation and a diploma from Harvard Business School. He credits his passion for education with helping him navigate the final years of his career and develop as a leader.
Reflecting on his time at Chelsea, where he arrived in 2012, Azpilicueta said the club's ambition pushed him to the maximum. He captained Chelsea to a Champions League final victory in 2021 and represented Premier League players during the Covid-19 pandemic. While he replied "maybe" when asked about a future role as a sporting director, he is currently focused on family and playing golf.
